Tomé Hill, located along the Rio Grande River in central New Mexico, is home to a
remarkable number of petroglyphs. While the majority are of the Rio Grande style, there are petroglyphs that range from Desert
Abstract to Recent. There appears to be a slight Mogollon
influence as well. The petroglyphs on the hill are relatively obscure and go unnoticed in general.
There is
always a question about whether to tell people about where
petroglyphs are so that they can enjoy them or to keep them a
secret so that vandals do not deface them. I struggled with this
one before I made this page, but believe it is better to have
others enjoy them and in the process keep them from being
vandalized. While updating the photos for this page I
noticed that there is a significant accumulation of trash (water
bottles, soda and beer cans and various other junk) since the last
time I was there. I hope that by publishing this page I have not
contributed to the increase in trash. Please if you go to look at
the petroglyphs, have the courtesy to take your trash home with
you.
